Charlie's Ark was set up eight years ago to give your dog a fun and exciting holiday while you are enjoying your break away. The idea is to give your dog exactly what they are used to at home and then some more.
The gaffer is Charlie the Cavalier & I (Ric) am simply his front of house/general manager ( & his Dad ! )
We have a dog home boarding licence with Amber Valley Borough Council and are fully insured
The environment we offer is as far removed from traditional kennel boarding as you can imagine.
All dogs have freedom of the lower floor of our home and garden.People like that we only have small breeds and a small number of dogs ( maximum being Charlie & 4 on a busy day ). The house is very much geared to 4 leggers and I fit in where they allow me !
Our minimum walking is 2 X 20 minute walks per day as stipulated by our Council licence but usually amounts to a lot more.please don't be put off if your friend needs a lot less as we can work round this and for those who really struggle to walk there is the large garden which is again very much geared to those with 4 legs !
We are very fortunate to have a great variety of lovely green walks in every direction just minutes from the front door.
Health & Hygiene:
When booking you must be able to show your dogs up to date vaccination records. We also ask that your dog has received both worming and flea treatments that are up to date and cover the period of the visit.
Heavy traffic areas and sites of any unfortunate accidents(!) are treated with Anigene High Level Disinfectant for Animal Habitats.
We ask you to bring your dogs normal food, which will be given to them as you would at home.
Home Boarding Prices
£25 a day for day care & £30 a day for 24 hour care
Please note that the charge is per day as opposed to per night - for example if your dog came to stay Saturday to Saturday the payment would be for 8 days. Your dog can arrive anytime after 8am on the first day and can be collected anytime up to 7pm on the last day.
Before we can accept a booking we would ask you to bring your dog to meet our dogs to ensure they will get on. We also ask that on the day of the "getting to know you" visit you bring your dogs vaccination record and a 25% non-refundable deposit.

Sadly they were full this time but they could not be more helpful in finding alternatives for me. I hope that Tommy, our lovely Cavalier, can go there one day as it does sound like a lovely place run by lovely, caring and helpful people!
From Malu on
Boarders Response:Thanks so much for your kind words Malu ..... so sorry we couldn't have Tommy this time & it was a pleasure trying to find him a place as we know just how frustrating it can be trying to track down somewhere for the busy times .... we very much look forward to meeting you all one day and welcoming Tommy to the best pad a cavalier can come to ! x
Daisy (Cockapoo, 2) went for an overnight stay with Ric on the day of our wedding. Ric sent photos of Daisy's time with him & she looked to have had a fabulous time. Would highly recommend boarding your dogs with Ric, it really is a home from home for them. Thank you Ric, see you again soon.
From Richard on
Boarders Response:Thanks Richard for your very kind words ..... so glad Charles & I were able to make your special day go all the smoother in the knowledge that Daisy was so happy while you did the brave deed ! .... outstanding behaviour for a first timer ..... she will always be welcome .... thanks again Ric & Charlie
Georgie has had a fantastic holiday with Ric and Charlie, he is only 9 months old and is fully of energy but Ric was happy to have him and I receiving some photos whilst away and seeing how happy Georgie was helped me know I had chosen the right place for him to go, Georgie is booked in another 2 times this year and I know he will be happy to back and stay. Thanks Ric for looking after him so well

Boarders Response:Thank you very much Jean .... it is always a pleasure to have the wonderfully mild mannered Jessie X
Davey, my little dog, has only recently started going to Charlie's Ark.
She's settled in beautifully. Ric's calm nature and welcoming home creates a lovely relaxing environment for little Davey. The dogs all get on well together, have nice walks, lots of fun then relax in a real home.. I really couldn't ask for more. Thankyou Ric and Charlie.
Gil and Davey.

Boarders Response:Thanks Gil & Davey for your lovely words ..... we look forward to your next swimming lesson soon X
My mini schnauzer Doogie is a regular at Charlie's Ark and I can't recommend it enough. I am very fussy about where Doogie stays and have always felt very comfortable leaving him with Ric and Charlie. My Doogie is a bit of a nervous dog but is totally relaxed with Ric who treats him like family.
From Mark Lambert on
Boarders Response:Very many thanks Mark ..... it is always a pleasure to have gentleman Doog on the team ! ...... Charlie & I very much look forward to his imminent return
Minnie always has a fantastic time on her adventures with Uncle Ric and Charlie. It's so reassuring to know that while we can't be with her, she is being so well loved and cared for and guaranteed to be having a brilliant time!
From Susan on
Boarders Response:Thanks so much Susan ...... Charlie & I know that a Minnie Egg isn't just for Easter ..... we love her here anytime of the year X
Thank you very much for giving our Cavalier 'Cooper' a lovely holiday whilst we went away. We did not want him to stay in Kennels as he is used to permanent company.Staying with Uncle Ric & Auntie Linda was ideal for him & he loved the company of the other dogs & long walks. Ric texts us after a couple of days which we found very reassuring & sends photos of the 'Gang' playing together. We hope to send him again next year.

Ben had a great time staying with Uncle Ric and Auntie Linda. He settled well and would be happy to go back anytime to see his friends. Although Ben was not able to go on long walks due to his age, this was not a problem as he was able to plod around the garden with his four legged friends.

Molly has stayed at Charlie's Ark a few times and I have every confidence that she is looked after well. She is quite nervous so a normal kennels would not be suitable for her. I know she has been well cared for by Ric; plenty of walks and love and she has settled quickly each time she's stayed. She's already booked in for her next stay!

My cocker spaniel, Dylan, has stayed with Ric and Charlie a few times now and has always enjoyed the experience. I can leave him in the knowledge that he is cared for and safe - the photos that Ric always sends shows him having a great time and that he is enjoying his hols as much as I am!

I am so glad I found Charlie's Ark. My two Cavaliers have been to stay with Ric twice now and have been so well looked after; long walks and lots of love. I definitely recommend Charlie's Ark for peace of mind; knowing that your dogs are happy whilst you are away is a great relief.
From Chris Griffiths on
Charlie's Ark is truly a 'Home from Home' for dogs. Ric takes such good care of all his charges that whilst away, I thought about my dog, Heidi, I didn't worry. I came home to a happy, lively dog who has made friends, exercised well and will no doubt return to Ric and all her new friends whenever the need arises. Thanks Ric P.S. Heidi is on the right of this picture!

Our puppy Phoebe was only 7 months old when I had to travel with work. Charlies Ark was the perfect solution while other family members were at work. From the very beginning Phoebe was settled and happy. She benefitted greatly from interacting with the other dogs and loved Charlie. Rik provides a wonderfully caring, attentive and homely environment for all his doggy guests. Phoebe was well cared for, as if she was a member of the family and she adored Rik.
I will certainly use Charlie Ark again and recommend it highly... You couldn't do better.

Ric is a kind, generous man that goes out of his way to make our cocker spaniel feel like she is at home from home. Lilo loves to spend the week or just the odd day. We feel content that our beloved pet is happy and very well looked after when we have to leave her.

My dog Heather went to stay at Charlie's Ark. She loved it and when I returned from Jamaica she had more picture of herself enjoying her break than I did. She had such fun playing with the other dogs and going on long walks with them. Ric is just totally devoted to the dogs he has in his care. My only problem is if too many people find out how good he is Heather will never get another holiday there as he will be fully booked. Thank-you for making Heather's stay so special.

My dog Tilly stayed a long weekend with Ric & Charlie, she had a fabulous time with lots of fun walks & love. Very homely that Tilly settled straight in. Would definitely recommend to anyone.

My two girls, Candy and Amber (Cavalier King Charles Spaniels) stayed with Uncle Ric at Charlie's Ark for several nights. I was mega apprehensive leaving them as in the past they'd been in kennels which wasn't a pleasant experience! I was really pleased with the loving care, long walks and fuss they received, which is evident from the many photos which Ric kindly emailed. They'll definitely be returning, no more kennels for them! Thank you so much for going that extra mile, literally! xx
From Linda on

I have 2 dogs - a Yorkshire Terrier and a Border/Lakeland cross who stay with Ric at Charlie's Ark - they loved it! Fantastic walks and Theo now has a new girlfriend who is a mountain dog who he has taken quite a fancy to. Now training Theo to keep his desires under control! I didn't know he had it in him!! Thanks Ric for taking such good care of them. I feel very comfortable leaving them with you. Kennels didn't work for me as the dogs were very distressed at being left and put in a cage. When I picked them up from Ric, they weren't that interested in me because they'd had such a good time - a home from home.

We was really impressed with the service our dog Obi was given.
He went to Charlies Ark for the day and he had 3 walks and looked a really happy dog when we collected him. Obi is returning back in May. Would defiantly recommend Charlies Ark. :-) Thank you so much.
From Stef Moylan on
Really impressed with the flexibility of Charlie's Ark as they were able to walk my dog at very short notice which I feel is invaluable. She came home having had a great walk and was even given a clean!
Will definitely be using Charlie's Ark more :-)
