About our Small Pet Boarding

We board: Rabbits

About me, my name is Catherine and I started Chestnut Corner after moving to the area in 2012 and having huge trouble finding a boarding establishment in the area that I would be happy to send my beloved rescue bunnies to. I ended up having to travel nearly 40 miles for somewhere I was happy with, so with help from my partner Dean coupled with my passion for caring for bunnies, Chestnut Corner was born! I have owned rabbits for over 8 years, and in that time have also volunteered and fostered for the RSPCA in their small animal department and other smaller private rescues. I am a member of the Rabbit Welfare Association and attend their yearly conferences to enhance my medical knowledge. I also am part of the Southern co-ordination team for Action for Rabbits, a voluntary organisation promoting rabbit welfare and rescues across the country.
I also have a permanent foster space for the RSPCA and have helped many bunnies find their forever homes.

We fully understand the importance of space for rabbits, so the boarding spaces we have on offer aren’t like standard 'hutches'! Our boarding hutches are 9ft long, 3ft deep and 2.5ft high, plenty of room for binkies and periscopes! They are lined with industrial grade non-slip vinyl flooring for cleanliness, and all guests are provided with all litter trays, bowls/bottles, hay racks, food bowls and vet bed. Security is taken very seriously, all doors have bolt locking and secure weld mesh, and the garden is locked at all times. Perspex shutters are used in inclement weather to keep bunnies warm and dry. We do not use wood shavings here at Chestnut Corner due to research that they are harmful to small animals, so instead line litter trays with newspaper, Megazorb and fresh hay on top. Hay is topped up and water changed daily, and litter trays changed as necessary. All you need to bring is some of your rabbits toys/chews to help them settle in and enough pelleted food to last the duration of their stay. I source my hay from a local farm, they grow their own hay and have a special field just for rabbit hay, so as a result it is really lovely and fresh. I always have readigrass available and often have a selection of speciality hays available, as well as dried forage/herbs and fresh forage in the summer months. A selection of fresh veg is also available.

At Chestnut Corner, we do not offer grass runs to guests. This is due to the high risk of disease and infections passing between guests via shared grassed exercise space - you cannot effectively disinfect grass! This is to protect both the guests staying with us and our resident rabbits. The apartments we offer at Chestnut Corner provide a rabbit with plenty of space to binky, hop and periscope 24 hours a day. Remember, rabbits are crepscular animals, so most active at dawn and dusk, therefore large accommodation should be provided at all times.

Health & Hygiene:

At Chestnut Corner, we practice veterinary grade hygiene standards. We use a veterinary disinfectant and all our accommodation is lined with non slip industrial vinyl flooring, which is totally wipe clean. All bowls, litter trays are also cleaned throughly with disinfectant between guests and only plastic tunnels/toys are provided by us as these can be disinfected thorougly.

Proof of vaccination against Myxo and VHD required on arrival.

As soon as you meet Catherine you are in no doubt how she feels about bunnies! She is simply the best holiday mummy you can find to look after your dearest babies. When she said about having to groom long haired rabbits or their poo is strung together I almost skipped around my living room. Here was somebody that knew how to look after buns. When we visited Chestnut Corner we met a kind caring highly knowledgeable bunny mad women. There is a form to complete with all your bunnies details on it times they like to be fed, what they eat etc nothing is missed out just Brillant. My Tino boy needs medication twice a day this was no problem he is on Metacam which she is so used to administering to her own beloved bunnies. Tino also has no front teeth and cutting his food into tiny pieces again nothing is too much trouble for her. I had a texted from Catherine to let me know my boys had settled in and were eating and pooing They were Happy. When I picked them, my beautiful boys, up they were happy very well groomed. What more could you ask for. Catherine is simply the best Thank you so much, Sonja & Harry

This is the first time I have used Chestnut Corner for my female rabbit. The boarding facilities are immaculate and Catherine has expert awareness about the welfare, need and care of rabbits. My rabbit was extremely well looked after and I will definitely use this boarding again in the knowledge that she will be well cared for. I highly recommend Chestnut Corner.
